Thoreau

Thoreau is shown here with Midnight. Thoreau is our only gelding. He was gelded after he reached his second birthday, the earliest we would consider gelding a llama.

Thoreau was acquired as a companion for Túpac, the first stud on our farm. Llamas are herd animals and are happiest when they are in the company of other llamas. Thoreau and Túpac were about a year old when Thoreau was acquired. Up until he was acquired our pastures were quite quiet, with just an occasional alarm call from one of our females. After Thoreau arrived, it sounded as though we had adolescent boys running around. He and Túpac would chase each other, wrestle and scream ... i.e., playing male llama games.

Thoreau adopted Easy Wynn when Easy was removed from the female herd. Under Thoreau's tutelage, Easy Wynn learned to behave like a male llama. Thoreau also protected Easy Wynn from the older male llamas.

Thoreau will be trained to participate in Obstacle trials. He will also be one of our public relations llamas, e.g., he will be taken to schools and nursing homes.
